Hanuman Jayanti 2026 — Date, Puja Vidhi, Sindoor Story, Mantras & 41-Day Deeksha Guide | April 2

Why Hanuman Jayanti on a Thursday is especially powerful this year

Every year, Hanuman Jayanti falls on Chaitra Purnima. But the day of the week changes. And this year — 2026 — it falls on a Thursday.

Thursday is Guruvar, the day of Jupiter (Brihaspati). Jupiter governs wisdom, grace, divine knowledge, and blessings. Hanuman himself is the embodiment of all of these — a warrior who is also a scholar, a devotee who is also a master of the Vedas. The alignment of Hanuman Jayanti with Jupiter's day amplifies everything about this festival: the prayers feel deeper, the rituals feel more connected, and devotees who are consistent in their practice on this day are believed to carry the spiritual energy forward for months.

If you couldn't do the morning puja — it's not too late. The Abhijit Muhurat around midday is also a powerful window. And even evening prayers today carry full auspiciousness because the full moon energy continues through the day.

The birth that even the universe tried to stop — Hanuman's origin story

Anjana was a celestial apsara who had taken birth as a vanara (monkey) due to a sage's curse — the curse would lift when she gave birth to a divine child. Her husband Kesari was a powerful vanara king. Together, they prayed — not for something ordinary, but for a son who would carry Shiva's own energy into the world.

On this very day — Chaitra Purnima — at sunrise — Pavan Dev, the Wind God, carried a portion of divine energy to Anjana. A child was born who was unlike anything the world had seen. So radiant, so powerful, so full of light that he mistook the rising sun for a ripe red fruit and flew into the sky to eat it.

Indra struck him with the Vajra to stop him. The infant's jaw (hanu) was injured — and that is how the name "Hanuman" came to be. Pavan Dev, furious at the injury to his son, withdrew all breath from the universe. Everything began to die. Brahma intervened. The deities came together and blessed the child with extraordinary gifts — immortality, strength, wisdom, shape-shifting ability, fearlessness. Indra himself blessed the child, saying his body would be as hard as the Vajra.

That child — born today, thousands of years ago — is Chiranjeevi. Immortal. He is believed to be physically present somewhere on this earth, even now. Which is why, on this day, when millions call his name — they are not invoking a memory. They are calling someone who is present and listening.

The Shiva connection — why Hanuman is more than just a devotee of Rama

Many people know Hanuman as Rama's greatest devotee. Fewer know the deeper layer — that according to the Shiva Purana, Hanuman is the eleventh Rudra Avatar of Lord Shiva himself.

When Lord Vishnu incarnated as Rama on earth to defeat Ravana and restore dharma, Lord Shiva chose to be born as Hanuman — not as a god on a throne, but as a servant, a friend, a soldier. He chose humility as his form. He chose devotion as his weapon.

This is why worshipping Hanuman gives you the combined blessings of both Shiva and Vishnu. Shiva's raw, protective, destructive-of-evil power — and Rama's grace, righteousness, and compassion. It is a rare and complete blessing that comes through a single act of devotion.

When you offer sindoor to Hanuman today — you are offering it to Shiva's own energy, wearing the form of pure devotion.

The story behind sindoor — the most meaningful offering you can make today

One day, Hanuman noticed Mother Sita applying sindoor to her forehead. He asked her what she was doing. She explained — this sindoor is for Lord Rama's long and healthy life. Every morning, this is how I pray for him.

Hanuman thought about this for a moment. And then — without hesitation — he went and covered his entire body in sindoor. Head to toe. Every inch. His reasoning was simple and completely his: "If a little sindoor keeps Prabhu Rama safe — then my whole body's worth will keep him safe forever."

Rama saw this and laughed — with pure joy, with deep love — and blessed Hanuman with an eternal boon: that whoever offers sindoor to Hanuman with a sincere heart will always receive his protection and his blessings.

This is why sindoor is the most important offering today. Not because of tradition. Because of what it represents — that kind of total, uncalculating devotion that doesn't ask "how much is enough?" but simply gives everything it has.

Hanuman Jayanti Puja — how to do it today, step by step

The puja does not need to be elaborate. Hanuman himself never asked for elaborate rituals — he asked for sincerity. Here is the complete vidhi, whether you have 20 minutes or an hour:

1

Bathe and wear red or saffron

These are Hanuman's colours — strength and devotion. Even a red dupatta or a saffron tilak on the forehead counts. Avoid black. Set up a clean space in front of Hanuman's photo frame or idol.

2

Light a ghee diya and incense

A cow ghee diya lit in front of Hanuman is considered especially auspicious — mustard oil lamps are also accepted on this day. Light chandan or chameli incense alongside. The fragrance sets the space.

3

Offer sindoor — the most sacred act today

Mix orange sindoor with a few drops of jasmine oil and gently apply it to Hanuman's image — forehead and chest. This "Chola" offering is the most pleasing thing you can offer today. After applying, touch a small amount of sindoor to your own forehead — carry his protection with you.

4

Offer red flowers, betel leaves and a Tulsi garland

Red hibiscus, marigold, betel leaves (paan) and a Tulsi garland are all deeply loved by Hanuman. The connection between Tulsi, Ram, and Hanuman runs all the way through Tulsidas — the poet-saint who wrote the Hanuman Chalisa and gave it this name in Tulsi's honour.

5

Offer prasad — boondi laddoo, gur-chana, banana

Offer first to Hanuman, then share with your family. If possible, give some to someone outside — to a child, to someone who is hungry. Hanuman's spirit is in that act of sharing. His favourite offerings are things that nourish — and when you share prasad, you are doing what he himself spent his entire life doing.

6

Recite the Hanuman Chalisa — 7 times today

Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa 7 times on Hanuman Jayanti is considered to fulfill all sincere wishes. Use a Rudraksha or Tulsi mala for mantra jaap — "Om Namo Hanumate Namah" 108 times. If you have time, the Sundara Kanda recitation is even more powerful — it is Hanuman's own chapter in the Ramayana.

7

Aarti — with camphor, close the puja properly

Do aarti with a brass panch deep diya. Close with Bhimseni camphor — carry it through every room. The camphor completely purifies the space. Think of it as Hanuman himself walking through your home.

Powerful mantras for today — and what each one does

The Core Mantra — 108 times, daily practice

"Om Namo Hanumate Namah"

The simplest and most direct. Fear, obstacles, negative energies, low confidence — this mantra addresses all of it. Use a mala. 108 times. Today and every Tuesday and Saturday going forward.

The Janmotsav Mantra — once today at sunrise or midday

"Manojavam Marutatulyavegam Jitendriyam Buddhimatam Varishtham,
Vatatmajam Vanarayuthamukhyam Shriramadutam Sharanam Prapadye"

Translation: I take refuge in that son of the Wind — swift as thought, conqueror of the senses, wisest among the wise, chief of the vanara forces, messenger of Shri Rama. Recite once today with full presence. This is Hanuman's complete identity in one verse.

For Saturn (Shani) Dosha Relief

"Om Shri Hanumate Namah"

Hanuman Jayanti is one of the most powerful days of the year for Shani dosha relief. If you are going through Sade Saati or Dhaiya — reciting the Hanuman Chalisa today once with full devotion is considered one of the most effective remedies in the entire Hindu calendar.

Telangana's 41-day Hanuman Jayanthi — what it means and how to begin

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, today is not just the end of a celebration — it is the beginning of one. Hanuman Jayanthi here is observed for 41 consecutive days, starting today and concluding on May 12, 2026 (Vaishakha Krishna Dashami).

The 41 days mirror Hanuman's own 41-day mission in Lanka — searching for Sita, surviving in enemy territory, sustaining himself on faith alone. Devotees who take the 41-day deeksha commit to daily Hanuman puja, Sundarakanda recitation when possible, satvik diet, and celibacy (brahmacharya) throughout. Major temples like Kondagattu Anjaneya Swamy Temple (Telangana) hold grand events throughout this period.

How to begin the 41-day Deeksha today:

Take a sankalp (vow) in front of Hanuman today — speak it out loud, clearly stating your intention to complete 41 days.

Every day: one Hanuman Chalisa recitation — slowly, with meaning. Not a race.

One ghee or mustard oil diya every day in front of Hanuman — no day skipped.

Satvik diet as much as possible — avoid non-veg and alcohol through the 41 days.

What devotion to Hanuman actually brings — in plain terms

Freedom from fear

Hanuman is called Abhaya — the fearless one. Not because he never faced danger, but because he faced every danger without ever hesitating. That quality transfers to those who worship him sincerely.

Protection from evil eye and black energy

Where Hanuman's name is spoken, negative energies cannot stay. This is why his image is placed at entrances, why his name is chanted before difficult tasks, why Bajrang Baan is used as a protective prayer.

Saturn dosha relief

Hanuman controls Saturn (Shani) — this is accepted across all traditions of Hindu astrology. Sade Saati, Dhaiya, or a difficult Shani transit becomes significantly easier through consistent Hanuman worship.

Physical vitality and strength

Hanuman is Pavanputra — son of the Wind God, which governs prana (life force). Worshipping him regularly increases energy, clarity, and physical resilience in ways that are genuinely noticeable over time.

One thing to do today — before the day ends

After your puja — put the phone down for five minutes. Sit quietly in front of Hanuman's image. And just talk to him. Not a scripted prayer. Not a memorised sloka. Just talk. Tell him what's actually going on. What you're afraid of. What you're hoping for. What keeps you up at night.

Hanuman is the deity who understands the ordinary human struggle better than almost any other divine being — because he chose to live it. He chose to be a servant, a soldier, a friend, an older brother. He is not looking for elaborate rituals. He is looking for honesty.

He burned Lanka with his own tail when someone he loved was in danger. He carried an entire mountain when a single herb would have done. He did not measure his devotion in proportionate responses. He just gave everything, every time.

On his birthday — that kind of love is available to anyone who asks for it sincerely. Jai Bajrangbali. 🙏
